6 Tips to Keep Your Machines Moving this Winter
From our Marne location Shop Supervisor, Bruce Keegstra
Winter conditions can be tough on heavy equipment. To keep your machines working on the job through the cold and snow, our Marne Shop Supervisor, Bruce Keegstra, has laid out six tips to help maintain top performance through the winter months.
- Check your fuel water separator.
“Before starting your machine, check your fuel water separator to make sure you don’t have water in the fuel. Even a little water contamination can cause your fuel to gel or freeze, and your machine won’t start.”
- Always warm up your machine.
“You need to let your equipment warm up and get that hydraulic fluid and coolant circulating before beginning work on cold days. It usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes if it’s below 32°F.”
- Inspect your coolant freeze protection.
“Make sure the freeze point on your coolant is low enough for the weather you’re operating in. You can use a tester tool that they sell at most automotive parts stores.”
- Ensure you have the right hoses and that they aren’t worn.
“Check for hydraulic hoses that are dragging on the ground or wearing out, and replace them now. You also want to make sure you have the right length hoses for your snowplow or box. If they are too long, they may get caught on the attachment; if they are too short, they can disconnect when you fully extend the box or plow.”
- Use a block heater.
“If you can use a block heater, it will make it easier to start in the cold and prolong the life of your engine. We can install one in your machine at McCann if you don’t already have one.”
- Never use ether starting fluid.
“You don’t want to use ether starting fluid in newer equipment. It’s hard on your engine and can cause serious damage if your machine has an engine preheater system.”
