Your wheel loader operator and machine features play a large role in how effectively and efficiently you fill dump trucks on the job. Your loaders spend a significant amount of time carrying material from one part of the worksite to the other. In order to make your operation as productive as possible, follow the tips below for loading trucks with your wheel loaders.
Choose the correct loading pattern
Crucial for boosting the efficiency of your wheel loaders is to reduce the distance that they have to travel, as well as the number of turns and maneuvers they need to make. When it comes to loading dump trucks, we recommend using the Y or V pattern. It works by positioning the truck with the rear of the vehicle just off the edge of the pile. Your wheel loader operator will start at about a 45 degree angle in relation to the dirt pile and the truck. They then pull forward, curving to the right, toward the pile to fill the bucket, reverse back to the 45 degree angle starting position, and then pull forward curving to the left to dump into the truck, before reversing back to the 45 degree angle to start the cycle again. The route during the entire cycle looks like a Y or a V, which is how this pattern received its name.
The key thing to remember is to maintain a consistent position with your dump trucks, so the Y cycle isn’t too large or too small. The wheel loader requires enough room to effectively maneuver, but not so much space that your operator has to travel longer than necessary, wasting valuable time and fuel.
Use wheel loaders that have the newest features
The route your wheel loader operator takes while loading your dump trucks is crucial, but so is having the best, most advanced features for the job. Below are some examples of the features you should look for:
- Boom kickout stops the boom at a preset height when lifting and assists the operator when they are consistently loading a dump truck or hopper at the same height for long period of time.
- Return to dig stops the boom at a predetermined point when lowering, so the bucket begins the cycle in the same position each time.
- Auto leveling automatically brings the wheel loader bucket from a dump or dig movement to a carrying position for traveling across the jobsite.
With these three features at their disposal, your wheel loader operator doesn’t need to guess and will save time by eliminating mistakes and corrections.
Ensure you have the right bucket
One of the most important factors for increasing the efficiency of your loading operation is choosing the correctly sized bucket. You have to take into account the maximum capacity of the dump trucks you’re loading, then calculate how many loads you need to make each day. Next, we suggest that you check your wheel loader operator manual to determine the capacities and tipping loads for your particular loader. After you gather all that information, find a wheel loader bucket that will fill your dump trucks in as few cycles as possible without exceeding the equipment’s limits.
