Remanufactured Long Block Engines

Service life varies with the engine configuration, installation quality, operating conditions, maintenance and the condition of reused ancillary components. McCann does not publish a universal service-life figure. Protect the investment with correct emissions configuration, suitable installation, preventative maintenance, fluid analysis and inspection of components such as the turbocharger, injectors, water pump and oil cooler.

A long block generally includes the engine block, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, bearings, camshaft, assembled cylinder head or heads and valvetrain. Exact contents vary by remanufacturing programme. External components such as the turbocharger, injectors, fuel system, pumps, manifolds, harness, sensors and emissions equipment may not be included, so confirm the parts list before ordering.

McCann scopes remanufactured engine options against the machine and engine serial number because similar machine models may use different configurations. Provide the make, model, serial information, failure symptoms and intended installation route. The parts team can then compare a long block with a short block, complete engine or in-frame overhaul and identify associated parts.

A short block generally stops below the cylinder head, while a long block adds the assembled cylinder head and valvetrain. A complete engine typically adds external accessories and systems needed to run the machine. A long block may reduce unit cost compared with a complete engine, but installation labour and the condition of reused accessories must be included in the comparison.

A remanufactured long block is normally supplied on an exchange basis, with a core charge added to the invoice. The charge is refunded when a rebuildable core is returned within the programme’s terms and in acceptable condition. Obtain the core value, return deadline and condition requirements in writing. Keep the core complete, drain fluids, protect openings and return it against the invoice.

Yes. Under 40 CFR 1068.120, a rebuilt or remanufactured engine must be restored to its original certified emissions configuration. Clean Air Act Section 203 also prohibits emissions-control tampering. Before purchase, request written confirmation that fuel, injection, EGR, aftertreatment and ECM requirements match the machine’s certification and retain the documentation with the equipment records.
