Excavator Final Drive Motors & Components

The final drive transfers power from the excavator’s hydraulic travel circuit to the track sprocket. Its hydraulic motor produces rotation, while the planetary gearbox reduces rotational speed and multiplies torque so the machine can travel. A brake may hold the machine when travel is not commanded. Weak or uneven travel can also result from faults outside the final drive, including the brake, swivel, control or hydraulic lines.

Travel motor problems commonly appear as weak or one-sided travel, lost speed, loss of two-speed operation or excessive case drain flow. Gearbox problems more often produce grinding, rumbling, knocking, metal in the gear oil or a falling oil level. These symptoms are not conclusive by themselves. Case drain, pressure and flow testing, along with gear oil inspection, can help identify the failed component.

Yes. Crooked tracking can result from a brake that is not releasing, a restricted travel line, a centre swivel fault, a control problem or another hydraulic issue. Replacing a final drive without testing can therefore create unnecessary cost. McCann recommends diagnostic checks such as travel pressure, flow and case drain testing before purchasing a major component.

Available options include new OEM units through stated dealer channels, quality aftermarket replacements and remanufactured assemblies rebuilt to OEM specification. Remanufactured installations may include parts and labour warranty, while exchange units can involve a core charge. Compare the complete cost, warranty terms, core requirements and whether the motor or gearbox alone is the failed component before choosing.

Provide the machine make, model and serial number together with the motor or final drive tag information. The application should also be identified as a travel or swing motor where relevant. Model variations can affect part selection, oil requirements and specifications. Investigate the cause of the original failure before fitting a replacement. Check hydraulic fluid condition and contamination, case drain performance, travel pressure, gear oil condition, sprocket seals, track tension and related undercarriage wear. Contaminated oil, an over-tight track, a restricted case drain or unresolved pressure problems can damage the replacement. Follow the machine manufacturer’s procedures for support, lockout/tagout, oil and installation.
