Hydraulic Pump Pressure Relief Valves

A relief valve protects a hydraulic system by diverting flow when pressure reaches its specified limit. A valve set too low can cause general loss of power, while one set too high or stuck closed can contribute to overheating, hose failures and pump wear. A valve stuck open may bypass continuously, producing heat and symptoms similar to a worn pump.

Do not adjust a relief valve by feel or by turning the adjuster until the machine feels stronger. The correct procedure requires the appropriate test port, a calibrated gauge, the machine at operating temperature and the OEM service procedure. McCann technicians can pressure-test the system, verify the setting against OEM data and record the result.

Testing under load is the reliable way to distinguish these faults. Low power across every function can point to a mis-set, contaminated or bypassing relief, while a worn pump may lose performance progressively and worsen when hot. A pressure and flow test can also identify suction-side problems or downstream leakage before another pump is purchased.

Provide the machine make, model and serial number, valve block casting or tag markings, and the specific relief involved, such as the main, port or work-port valve. Visually similar cartridges can have different pressure settings and may be superseded. Identification from the valve body and machine data is safer than selecting a replacement by appearance alone.

A relief valve that bypasses continuously sends pumped energy back to tank instead of converting it into useful machine movement. That energy becomes heat, which can age seals and hoses throughout the system. An unusually hot return line under load can support the diagnosis, but pressure testing and inspection are needed to confirm the relief is the source.

The correct remedy depends on the fault. Contamination can hold the poppet off its seat, so cleaning, fluid analysis, filtration work and resetting may resolve the problem. A worn seat, damaged bore or unsuitable cartridge may require a replacement valve, seal kit or complete valve section. McCann can test the existing component before a replacement is ordered.
