How McCann Helped Recover a Stolen Machine
Plus, Tips on Theft Prevention for Your Jobsites
Recently, a long time customer realized that his Takeuchi machine was stolen from a Chicago-area jobsite. He quickly contacted McCann Industries and asked if it could be tracked using GPS. The team at McCann Industries was able locate the equipment about a mile away from the jobsite and the police were called to recover the $80,000 machine.
McCann Industries was able to use the GPS Fleet Management System, which automatically collects and wirelessly transmits data about Takeuchi equipment, allowing you to track its location at all times. There’s also the option to add LoJack to recover the equipment if it’s stolen.
Theft can happen to anyone at any time. There are many costs associated with theft including equipment replacement, short term rentals, lost time dealing with law enforcement and adjusters, increased labor costs due to downtime, and penalties that could be imposed if a project is delayed.
In an effort to prevent theft, we’ve outlined a few proactive steps you can take for added jobsite security.
Theft Prevention through Jobsite Security
Enclose the Site and Post Warning Signs
- If possible, have only one entrance and exit to the site.
- Secure fencing around the jobsite. Use an 8 foot fence that’s a see-through material such as chain link, so trespassers can be spotted.
- Use barbed wire or razor tape at the top of fences.
- Post “Warning” or “No Trespassing” signs around the fencing of your jobsite. Outline the laws that will be broken and the penalties enforced if ignored.
- Conduct routine fence inspections. Immediately repair any damage.
Illuminate the Area with Lighting
- Place lights along the border of the property.
- Aim lights into the worksite.
- Conduct routine lighting inspections. Promptly change light bulbs, if necessary.
Deter Theft through Equipment Security
Anchor and Mark Your Equipment
- Secure unattended on-site equipment with chain or cable.
- Paint the chains with a bright color for an added deterrent.
- Have a welder engrave your company name on all equipment.
Immobilize and Track Equipment
- Remove the hitch on towed equipment or trailers.
- Remove the tires on equipment that’s not used regularly.
- Install theft prevention devices that disable fuel, hydraulic and/or electrical systems on higher value equipment.
- Consider removing wires and/or battery on larger equipment.
- Install a GPS tracking device
- Use CASE Sitewatch Telematicsor Takeuchi Fleet Management
- Utilize security features provided by manufacturers.
Increase the Odds of Recovering Stolen Equipment
Be prepared if your equipment is stolen. Reduce downtime and keep accurate records to help aid a police investigation. You’ll increase the odds of recovering stolen equipment if you follow these few record keeping tips.
Keep Records Up to Date
- Register each unit on the national database used by law enforcement. Add a decal warning to the equipment so thieves can see that the equipment is registered.
- Maintain detailed and accurate inventory of all equipment on a worksite. Record the year, manufacturer, model number, and serial number.
- Take photos of all units from each side and update photos as needed.
- Record all modifications like paint color and report to the police to help aid identification and proof of ownership.
- Register your equipment on a national database that works with law enforcement such as the National Equipment Register, also known as NER.
Most importantly, if you spot your stolen equipment, don’t retrieve it yourself. Let law enforcement do their job and retrieve it for you.
